Godwit Days is a three-day spring migration bird festival celebrating the Marbled Godwit and all the birds of the coastal redwoods, bays, marshes, and mudflats of California's Redwood Coast. Choose from over 100 field trips, lectures, workshops, and boat excursions. Pre- and post-festival trips are available for an extended stay and opportunity to explore all the birds of the North Coast and Klamath Bioregion. Join us at the Opening Reception and Art Exhibition at the Arcata Community Center, where you can meet celebrated wildlife and nature artists, talk to our expert field trip leaders, and hear our keynote speaker. Perhaps you would like to make an inquiry about a particular species. Included with your registration are two days of compelling videos, beginning birding seminars, and breath-taking live birds of prey to see. View the beautiful selection of art by our top North Coast artists. Browse the Bird Fair and see the products and information you can't be without -- and don't forget to purchase a Godwit Days shirt or cap as a remembrance.
The festival takes place April 15-21, 2010 in Arcata, Calif. More information from their website, www.godwitdays.com.
Save the date, Saturday April 24, 2010 for a friendly birding competition/fundraiser to support Friends of the Desert Mountains, various Audubon Societies and Bird Clubs, Preserves, Parks, Conservancies and other conservation organizations throughout Southern California. Teams compete to identify as many birds species as they can in a 24-hour period by sight or by sound in the four counties included in the Palms to Pines Birding and Nature Trail: Riverside, San Bernardino, Imperial, and San Diego.
American Birding Association "Big Day" rules apply. All competing teams report to the finish line at the Monument Visitor Center in Palm Desert between 6 p.m. and midnight. Different competitive and non-competetive catagories will be available such as: "sand to sea" (multiple counties - trophy catagory), "single county," "single site," "big sit" (one spot), "on foot," "golf courses only," and "youth." Fun for all ages!
All participants will pay a nominal entry fee and accept pledges to raise money for their selected causes to ultimately benefit wild birds and their habitats.
Sponsored by the Friends of the Desert Mountains and the Desert Cities Bird Club. For more informatioin or to sign up: call Kurt Leuschner at 760.776.7285 or email kleuschner@collegeofthedesert.com.
